Why The Batman is the BEST Batman Film...

Writer's picture: Kat BrowningKat Browning

The Batman was a phenomenal film! It's dark, gritty, noir...just my kind of thing! And as a huge fan of detective work, I am forever grateful that they learned a lot more into that aspect of Batman. It’s a side of him from the comics that we’ve not gotten much of on the big screen.

While I think Pattison makes a fantastic Batman, I’m indifferent to Pattinson as Bruce Wayne. Maybe it was the longer hair and “emo” look that threw me off, I'm not sure. But I don't hate or love it. It’s just…weird. It does fit with the darker tone of this one, I suppose. As I previously stated, his portrayal of the Caped Crusader himself blew me away! I think a lot of us were pleasantly surprised by that, as the whole world was hoping he’d do well.

The Riddler stole the show! I got Se7en vibes from the back and forth stuff between him and Batman. I think we all probably did. I’m not sure how I feel about his mask design, but it is an interesting change. Colin Ferrell as The Penguin…incredible! The makeup department deserves an Oscar for that one. He is totally unrecognizable! I’m looking forward to seeing more of the character in the future, as we didn't get much of him in the film. What we did get was fun, though! Catwoman was great, too. Definitely a different sort of Selina Kyle. And Zoe and Pattinson have great on-screen chemistry!

The cinematography was the icing on the already perfect cake! A few particular shots blew me away and almost brought tears to my eyes. In fact, I’m pretty sure they actually did. My most favorite scene in the film is when Batman is in a car chase with the Penguin, and Penguin's car flips. The shot of Batman walking up through Penguins upside down mirror with a fiery background, was everything to me! Batman’s introduction and “I am vengeance” scene is a good one, too!

The only real issue I had with the film was that it is longer than it needed to be. That seems to be the general consensus amongst all viewers. The pacing was fine. I get why the slower moments were slow. Usually something important or emotional was happening in them that furthered the story. But generally, I feel like the film could have been shortened somehow.

This very well may be the BEST Batman film overall. The Dark Knight and Batman '89 were phenomenal films with a lot of really great moments. But they still had their flaws (as does The Batman). This one, to me, is just more solid overall. It isn’t my favorite Batman film, or even my second favorite. It’s just the one that I think most captures what the character(s) are in the comics. Everything is translated so well to the screen, and watching it feels like reading early Batman Detective Comics! Or even something like The Long Halloween. I absolutely recommend The Batman to any and everyone! Long time fans of the comics, Batman film lovers, and even just casual movie-goers. Big things are on the horizon for this Batman and this version of his villains, and I couldn’t be more excited for it!

Overall, I give The Batman 4.8 out of 5 Stars.
