Recently, I re-watched season one with my stepdad. It's been so long since I first watched it that I had forgotten so much that happened. It was nice to get a little refresher. Unlike most shows, the first season of Dexter isn't my favorite. it is a really good one, though.
In this season we meet Dexter Morgan, a blood analyst at Miami Metro Polie Department, who doubles as a serial killer. He works closely with the very people he has to hide his crimes from, which is kind of interesting. He has a few close calls in this season and it's fun to watch that play out. He describes himself as emotionless and conscience-less, but seems to show otherwise throughout the season. Like any notorious serial killer, he's dark and brooding and extremely intelligent. What sets him apart from most killers though, is that he has a code to follow. He only kills people who truly deserve it.
We are also introduced to some pretty interesting characters. First, there's Debra Morgan, Dexter's adoptive sister. She's got a VERY foul mouth, which provides for some nice humor in the season (and the whole series really). She's headstrong, impulsive, and emotional. Quite the opposite of Dex so she's a great foil for him. Angel Batista is a detective at the precinct. He's probably the most human character on the show. He's good-natured and kind, and very reliable. And above everything else, honest. If Dexter has a best friend, it's Angel. Personally, I think he may be my favorite character. He's just such a stand-up guy.
Vince Masuoka is the resident pervert lol But he's comical. He's the lead forensics specialist. Maria LaGuerta starts the series as the Captain of the PD. She is politically driven and not above getting dirty. Personally, I am not a fan of her. I just don't like her attitude. Sergeant James Doakes never plays around and takes his job too seriously. He is the only one that can tell that Dexter is hiding something from the very beginning. The amount of times he uses the "F Bomb". is pretty amusing too! Lastly, we are introduced to Rita Bennett, Dexter's girlfriend. She has two kids, Astor and Cody. Her ex husband Paul was abusive and an addict who for half the season, is in jail. Once he is paroled, he wastes no time becoming a problem for Dexter and Rita.
In this season, the team chases down a killer known as the "Ice Truck Killer". He is killing hookers, draining them of their blood, and chopping them up. He displays their bodies in creative places all across Metro Miami. In an interesting turn of events, he knows all about Dexter's secret and spends the season toying with him.
This season is good. We see Dexter go from "emotionless" to actually showing some hints of emotions. We learn through flashbacks more about how he became a killer. It's cool to see his ritual and how incredibly intelligent he is. But what I love most, is all the crazy twists that happen along the way. Especially in the last episode. I find it interesting to get some insight on blood analyst, too. I highly recommend this show to anyone, but especially fans of crime shows and killers!
Overall, I give Dexter Season One 4 out of 5 Stars!
