Slasher (S1 Review)

KatMarie

It's truly a great time to be a Horror fan, especially when it comes to tv. There's so many horror shows out there now and most of them are quite successful. Slasher to me, is no exception. I honestly think that if enough people had heard of it or watched it and it is in the right hands, it could be the next big thing. But that's just my opinion.

Slasher is a Chiller original show and it fairly new. There's currently only one season (available on Netflix now). There's no word yet on if and when a new season will air. The show follows Sarah Bennet, the sole survivor of her family's brutal Halloween Night 1988 murder. Her mother was pregnant with her at the time and the killer ripped Sarah from her body. He left her there, though. You just have to watch to see how this plays out. It to me, takes inspiration from John Carpenter's Halloween and I just love that. The show definitely borrows elements from other slasher movies too. Only, it focuses on an all adult cast as apposed to the usual teenagers.

Anyways, now an adult, Sarah moves back to the town (and home) where the brutal murders happened to try and find some closure. She wants answers and soon finds them. Her husband Dylan becomes the editor in chief at the local newspaper which at times causes him to be conflicted. The killer, nicknamed the "Executioner" is locked up safely behind bars. Sarah confronts him demanding answers in what is reminiscent of the Clarice Starling/Hannibal Lecter moments in Silence of the Lambs. Their relationship dynamic is intriguing, especially as the season progresses.

Amidst all of that, their appears to be a copycat killer that shows up at the same time Sarah arrives back in town. He is killing people who turn out to be not so innocent themselves. His methods of punishment reflect the seven deadly sins. So basically, he kills people guilty of envy, pride, gluttony, sloth, greed, lust, and wrath. I find it exciting to see these play out. The big twist ending where the killer is revealed is incredible.

As I said, this really is a good show and it has so much potential. I really hope to see more of it in the future and that it stays on par with the first season. The characters are well developed too. You actually find yourself caring what happens to most of them, and feeling satisfied when others get their due. If you love horror (especially slashers), check this show out. It only has 8 episodes so it won't take much time to get through it. It might not be the most original idea, or the best executed, but I absolutely adore it. It revived so much that I loved about old slasher movies, and slashers are my favorite!

Overall, I give Slasher Season 1 4.5 out of 5 Stars.
